C is for Crucio
Crucio, also known as the Cruciatus Curse or the torture curse, is one of three Unforgivable Curses in the Harry Potter universe. Casting any of them is seen as a one way ticket to Azakaban. But, did you know that the Cruciatus Curse is the reason our dear friend Neville Longbottom was raised by his grandmother?
When cast successfully, Crucio inflicts intense, all consuming pain. Harry himself described it as “white-hot knives piercing every inch of his skin.” If the victim is subjected to the curse for a long time, they are likely to go insane. Unfortunately, this is exactly what happened to Neville’s parents, Frank and Alice Longbottom.
Death Eaters Bellatrix, Rodolphus, and Rabastan Lestrange, as well as Barty Crouch Junior, thought that Frank and Alice knew where to find Voldemort after he had lost his powers, and tortured them for the information. This attack was considered one of the most heinous in modern magical history and the four Death Eaters were sentenced to life in Azakaban. Frank and Alice ended up in St Mungo’s Hospital for Magical Maladies and Injuries, and they never recognized their son again.
