M is for Muggle

A muggle is a non-magical person who comes from a non-magical family. They are not to be confused with Squibs, who are also non-magical people but have at least one magical parent.

The term muggle is unique to the British wizarding world. In America, they are called No-Maj. The French use the term non-magiques, which simply translates to non-magics. Although it may sound offensive, the word muggle is non-derogatory and often used affectionately.

L is for Lupin

Remus Lupin was everyone’s favourite professor. His students regarded him as the best Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher they’d ever had. He was even the one who taught Harry Potter how to conjure a Patronus. As far as cool professors go, it doesn’t get much better than Lupin.

All good things must come to an end, however. Maybe he was jealous, maybe he was bored, maybe he simply wanted the job for himself. Whatever the case, Severus Snape decided to snitch on Lupin and reveal to the public that he was a werewolf.

It’s understandable that parents don’t want their children to be taught by a werewolf. It was hardly the most dangerous part about attending Hogwarts at the time, but it was at least an avoidable danger.

Owls came in demanding his resignation, and Lupin obliged. Staff and students alike were sad to see him go, though they understood that a professor biting a student would be a PR disaster.

K is for Knut

The Knut (pronounced K'noot) is the least valuable coin of all the wizarding currencies. There are 29 Knuts in one silver Sickle, and there are 493 Knuts in one golden Galleon.

One might expect that such a coin couldn’t be used for much, but The Daily Prophet, the largest newspaper for British wizards, costs exactly one Knut, and that includes delivery by owl!

For comparison, The Globe and Mail, Canada’s largest newspaper, costs $0.99 per week, the equivalent of 45 Knuts, and isn’t even delivered by owl.

J is for Jinx

Last time we focused on one specific curse, this release looks at a whole suite of dark charms.

A Jinx is a bit of minor dark magic. Unlike curses, which are unforgivable and get you sent straight to Azkaban, jinxes are minor annoyances. They’re closer to pranks than anything truly harmful. A wizard could use a jinx to slow someone down, or try and buck them off their broom.

There’s a few reasons why a wizard should think twice about casting a Jinx. They can be blocked with an anti-jinx, or countered with a counter-jinx. And just like pranks, once you jinx your friend, you open the possibility of them putting a jinx on you as revenge.

Perhaps the biggest impediment is that the caster must keep their eyes on the target, meaning they might have to go quite some time without checking their phone.

I is for Imperio

The Imperio spell is one of three unforgivable curses, granting the caster complete control over another person or animal.

Unlike the Cruciatus Curse, one of the other three unforgivable curses, being under the Imperio spell is not an unpleasant feeling. When Harry Potter was placed under the curse, he described it as, “the most wonderful feeling… floating sensation as every thought and worry in his head was wiped gently away, leaving nothing but a vague, untraceable happiness.”

Those under the curse find themselves imbued with abilities they otherwise didn’t possess. Wizards can cast spells far above their typical ability, and Neville Longbottom became quite the acrobat while.

Despite the pleasant feeling and newfound abilities, it’s still considered extremely bad taste to override an individual’s free will. Any wizard caught using one of the three unforgivable curses was automatically given a life sentence in Azkaban.

For the record, us Jostlers are not in the habit of casting curses, unforgivable or otherwise!

H is for Hermione

Hermione was such a keen student that in her third year at Hogwarts, she wanted to take every single available class.

To help her with this goal, Professor McGonagall went to the Ministry of Magic to get special permission for Hermione to use a Time-Turner. The device bent the fabric of time, allowing her to attend classes that were scheduled at the same time.

Unfortunately the concept of work-life (or school-life in this case) mustn’t have made its way to the wizarding world yet.

Despite having the ability to literally have more hours in the day than everyone else, poor Hermione never used the Time-Turner to give herself some much needed rest and relaxation. For the entire school year, she was constantly exhausted and feeling overworked.

I don’t know about everyone else, but I'd definitely use the Time-Turner to sneak in a nap or two!
