5 ways to renew employee motivation

Now’s a great time to reconsider how to support and motivate your team in the new year. After all, we’re getting ready for a fresh start!

It's now the end of the year, and no doubt it's been a trying one for your employees. So after the year-end reviews and pats-on-the-back all around, they still might need a little extra something to help put 2020 behind them and look forward to a fresh start in 2021. Which makes this a great time to reconsider your employee engagement strategy and how to support and motivate your team in the new year.

If you're not quite sure how to motivate your employees, then don't worry. We've got five strategies for your consideration right here:

1. Personal and professional training budget

In this financial situation, many companies chose to cut down employee development expenses. A great way to show employee commitment is by granting them a training budget. Not only does this show that you’re invested in their development, but well-matched programs can also fill in competency gaps and be critical to company success.

2. Reshare company goals and focus on the “why”

For your first all-hands meeting of 2021, have your leaders share broader company goals and reinstate organizational purpose, so employees can know how they individually contribute to the entire community. Keeping everyone in the loop can help put everyone moving and back on track faster. When clarity and alignment are achieved, you’ll likely see employees share and promote more about the company.

3. Change up the routine

The start of a new year is the time to implement feedback and experiment with new ideas. Whether it’s a fresh format for brainstorming sessions, adding a new tool to your tech stack, or cleaning up the files, add something new to the workday! Sharing with your employees that change is on the way can also be a great way to refresh their curiosity and renew their career motivation.

4. Encourage connection

If your company hasn’t organized networking events, Zoom parties, or workshops in general, why not now? Start small by mixing people from different departments for a project, then branch out with workshops to gain insight from customers. You can also encourage them to reach out to industry peers on LinkedIn for any personal tips and sharing.

5. Refresh your well-being strategy

The workforce in the world today requires well-being and benefit programs that offer flexibility and relevant support. Instead of an overwhelming list of benefits, ask your employees what you can do to better adjust and tailor to their needs.

Conclusion

It’s been a tiring year, and given our unique situation, employees might not be enjoying their normal festivities over these holidays. If we want to take the lessons from 2020 and keep those spirits high, leaders ought to put some effort into inspiring energy, wisdom, and motivation. Don’t forget to normalize breaks, and most importantly, have FUN with your coworkers!
